For artist Ivan David Ng (b. 1991), his Hakka heritage faces loss and distortion due to time and human migration. By appropriating landscape images, archival materials and various mediums, Ivan explores what is lost as he seeks to stitch together his ancestors’ past and identity in A Means of Knowing #4.

“Ivan David Ng shared with me the sound of his heartbeat which I was able to amplify and equalize to a clear audible level. This sound has been paired with the sounds of solar wind recordings from NASA’s Parker Solar Probe. This speaks to Ivan’s contemplation of selfhood about his ancestors with whom he is united by knowing that wherever they have been, they have all looked to the same sky, the same celestial bodies, for thousands of years”.
