Gabriel Aries Setiadi’s (b. 1984) Eutuf, Fath and Haqq toy with the idea of understanding and compromise across binaries. In these contemporary sculptures, different materials, shapes and sizes are incorporated into the composition to achieve balance and harmony, reflecting the artist's view that although humans come from different backgrounds, negotiation and empathy are essential to coexist peacefully.

“Looking at Gabriel’s work, I see relationships between what is natural, what is rough, and what is shaped, stone having become “civilized”. He described to me that in his work, that when joining two pieces in his work, “each must make a sacrifice to the other”. I also can imagine that his works are strange kind of musical instruments. In the spirit of these ideas I offer for Gabriel’s work two sounds, first the sound of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC under construction, and a train in Central City Nebraska in the middle of the night (in E minor)”.
