Umi Dachlan
The Modernist Series #8: Imagi: Art Agenda Jkt
“As long as (objects found in nature) give off vibrations, there is a sensation within them. Those vibrations can take your breath away... (I) choose from what I see that touches my attention and thoughts.” - Umi Dachlan
Highlighting the works of Umi Dachlan, the word Imagi is chosen to embody The Modernist Series #8. Imagi evokes a sensory stirring, a spark from which ideas begin to take shape. It reflects the spirit of Umi Dachlan herself. Her journey in art began with imagi drawn from the life she observed and felt, the contours of natural landscapes, sacred cultural sites across distant lands, the rhythms of social life, and the harmonies of classical music. All of these she absorbed and transformed into abstract compositions, each one a quiet masterpiece.
Umi Dachlan's works are unique and cannot be grouped into specific styles from year to year. Throughout her life, Umi Dachlan created works using different mediums and styles. Yet, in this exhibition, the two recurring themes in her abstract works are: nature and spirituality. These two themes are interwoven, as Umi Dachlan has always been fascinated by the nature around her. She often pauses to sketch landscapes, then simplifies their forms into abstraction.
Umi Dachlan's creative process is not merely a matter of abstraction; the forms that appear in her works are the result of her inner struggles, what she herself described as contemplation. The charm of nature that she reflects on leads her to an imagi and awareness of the grandeur of the Almighty. Umi Dachlan then not only creates works from the essence of forms in nature, but also gives birth to compositions of forms that she feels can represent her contemplation of the Divine Creator.
