Pasang Surut
Wanti Amelia
: Art Agenda, JKT

Overview
Beyond its literal context of the ocean, pasang surut (ebbs and flows) also resonates with our daily lives. Sometimes, we are buoyed up during a high tide, while at other moments, we’re pulled back by a receding tide. Yet, it’s important to remember that high tides can overwhelm us, just as a calm sea can offer tranquillity.

This complex duality is captured in Wanti Amelia's work, where brushstrokes flow and intertwine across canvases. Deep, dark blues blended with radiant teal hues are interspersed with white ripples that elicit seafoam or beams of light, while grains of sand that glimmer like gold complete these swirling compositions that evoke the ocean’s surface.

Through her latest body of works, Wanti negotiates the high and low tides, uncovering feelings that remain unchanged amidst the ebbs and flows. This solo exhibition distils the essence that emerges as the tides recede: starting from the refraction of light on the sea's surface, to a submergence into the crashing waves, then finally a return to the shore.

Wanti Amelia was born in Bandung in 1998. She graduated from Institut Seni Budaya Indonesia, Bandung, in 2021, majoring in Fine Arts. Wanti has been actively producing works since 2018 with an interest in the relationships between human emotion and nature, mainly the sea and seashore. To Wanti, painting is a medium of intimacy to know and accept herself fully, from the negatives and the positives.

Pasang Surut is our fourth collaboration – and a first solo – with Wanti after Under the Sun (2023), Do you hear the invisible sound? (2023) and Elegi Buih (2023). This is the third exhibition curated by Stella Wenny after Do you hear the invisible sound? (2023) and Elegi Buih (2023).
