Over time, the tree or edifice decomposes and decays, leaving the banyan standing as a columnar tree with a hollow central core. In civilisations where the banyan tree is prevalent, this core is the abode of deities and spirits, and endows the banyan tree with mythological and religious significance.

In real life, the majestic and enormous proportions of the banyan tree shelters and sustains life. Affandi’s interest in the banyan tree is directed this way and he often paints life underneath the banyan tree where a market springs forth. Hawkers bring their freshest produce and livestock.
