One of the most powerful subjects in Affandi’s oeuvre, the banyan tree bears multiple meaning and symbolism.
Depicted in Indonesia’s coat of arms, the banyan tree is a manifestation of the third principle of Pancasila - the unity of all of Indonesia.
The way the banyan tree germinates is particularly interesting. In many instances, it grows by enveloping a host tree or man-made edifice with a mesh of roots. Over time, the tree or edifice decomposes and decays, leaving the banyan standing as a columnar tree with a hollow central core. In civilisations where the banyan tree is prevalent, this core is the abode of deities and spirits, and endows the banyan tree with mythological and religious significance.
In real life, the majestic and enormous proportions of the banyan tree shelters and sustains life. Affandi’s interest in the banyan tree is directed this way and he often paints life underneath the banyan tree where a market springs forth. Hawkers bring their freshest produce and livestock. Sellers lay out their wares. Itinerant performers stage shows. The populace gathers and bonds. The social ecology of a banyan tree is the microcosm of community and nation.
